Prayer of Confession –   (please remain seated)

Leader:        You are faithful, Patient God, even as we continue to live in the shadows of life.

People:        We could delight in Your hopes for us, but choose to do things our way.

Leader:         We could serve the most vulnerable around us, but long to pal around with the powerful.

People:        We could share the glad news of deliverance, but prefer to swap stories and gossip.

Leader:        There is none like You, Redeemer of all Your children.

People:        You lean over to listen to our prayers, and whisper forgiveness to our souls.

Leader:        You lift us out of the holes we dig for ourselves, and set us on hope’s solid ground.

People:        You strengthen our weak faith with the life, grace, and love of Jesus Christ, our Lord, our Savior. Amen.

There’s a lot of pain but a lot more healing

There’s a lot of trouble but a lot more peace

There’s a lot of hate but a lot more loving

There’s a lot of sin but a lot more grace

Chorus

Oh outrageous grace

Oh outrageous grace

Love unfurled by heaven’s hand

Chorus: /Cont’d

Oh outrageous grace

Oh outrageous grace

Through my Jesus I can stand

There’s a lot of fear but a lot more freedom

There’s a lot of darkness but a lot more light

There’s a lot of cloud but a lot more vision

There’s a lot of perishing but a lot more life – Chorus twice

I Will Offer Up My Life –  Matt Redman

(please stand as you are able))

I will offer up my life

in spirit and truth,
pouring out the oil of love

as my worship to You.
In surrender I must give my every part.
Lord, receive the sacrifice

of a broken heart.

Chorus:

Jesus, what can I give, what can I bring
to so faithful a friend, to so loving a King?
Saviour, what can be said, what can be sung as a praise of Your name for the things You have done?

Chorus: /Cont’d

Oh, my words could not tell, not even in part of the debt of love that is owed by this thankful heart.

You deserve my ev’ry breath,
for You’ve paid the great cost
giving up Your life to death,
even death on a cross.
You took all my shame away,
there defeated my sin,
opened up the gates of heav’n
and have beckoned me in.  Chorus

Isaiah 49: 1 – 7 (page 592 in pew bible)

The Servant’s Mission

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away!
The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.” And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord,  and my God has become my strength— he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

John 1 29- 42 (see page 862 – 863 in pew bible/back of bulletin) John 1: 29 – 42

The Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

The First Disciples of Jesus

35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). 42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

PROVISION TIME

Week of January 15, 2017

The word ‘Provision’ has two connotations.

*Provisions include the things we need to live.

*Pro Vision is the desire to see to where and to whom God is leading us.

Provision Time is a weekly opportunity for any person to meet informally with others.  At this time relationships are built through mutual sharing and caring.  God is served in worship.  Learning and equipping takes place so that all are encouraged to respond to shared visions for ministry and the employment of their gifts.  The informal home and small group setting provides a context in which neighbour and friend can experience the Good News – (God with us, God in us, God through us).

Where is Provision Time this week?

Tuesday  – 7:30 p.m. / Eileen Kelley’s, 1 Barrett Rd.

OPEN: As a child, what would it take for you to believe something your brother or sister told you?

John 1: 29 – 42

DIG:

  1. How would these first disciples be accepted into leadership roles in your church today? Which one would you most like to have as a pastor?

  1. In light of verses 30 – 31, how do you think John felt when his disciples left him to follow Jesus? What does this say about John?

  1. What motivated the disciples of John to follow Jesus? What motivated Andrew to tell Simon about him?

REFLECT:  What was your motive for initially following Jesus?  What were the circumstances that led you to do so?  How much did you know about him?

Looking for Volunteers

The nominating committee is looking for volunteers to fill roles on the

various teams by the upcoming huddle at the end of January.    As you think

about your plans for 2017, please consider how you can share your time and talent as a member of one of the teams working on delivering our vision for Calvary.  Although all teams would welcome new volunteers, we are especially interested in volunteers for the communications team, the Grace Pascoe Care Centre, as well as the role of moderator.   A brief description of each team

is available with your bulletin today.

If you are interested in participating, please contact either the team chair or one of the members of the nominating committee: Barb Sneyd, Evan Butchers or Heather Mains.
